1st Joint Nordic Meeting on Remediation of Contaminated Sites

OBJECTIVE
The Nordic countries invite you to NORDROCS, held at Slagthuset in Malmö, south Sweden, September 20-21, 2006. The objective of NORDROCS is to address issues on contaminated site remediation and assessment in the context of Nordic conditions. The meeting intends to provide a forum for the exchange of information gathered through research and project experience. Target groups include consultants, contractors, scientists, regulators and other professionals working with contaminated areas under Nordic conditions.
PROGRAMME
NORDROCS focuses on the latest news in research and development as well as implemented techniques for contaminated areas. The topics presented, partly as parallel sessions by our abstract speakers, represent the issues associated with contaminated sites in the Nordic countries and will include:
· STATE-OF-THE-ART PROJECTS FROM THE NORDIC COUNTRIES
· CONTAMINATED WATERS AND SEDIMENTS
· CONTAMINANT LEACHING
· RISK ASSESSMENT
· REMEDIATION TECHNOLOGIES
Our keynote speakers will specially highlight national policies, state-of-the-art projects and the issue of new contaminants. Proceedings with short papers and abstracts will be available when the meeting opens.

LOCATION
The meeting will be held at Slagthuset in central Malmö which is an interesting building complex with its own history as the butchers centre. All arrangements, including Sound Evening and Conference Dinner, will be held in different parts of the building.

REGISTRATION
Registration to NORDROCS needs to be completed by June 9, 2006. Exhibition and poster space will be available for the delegates next to the meeting rooms.

TOURIST IN MALMÖ
Malmö, Sweden’s third largest city, is a commercial hub and a cosmopolitan metropolis. But with a population of some 270,000 people who between them speak more than 100 languages and have roots linking them to more than 160 countries, this shouldn’t come as a surprise. It has undergone massive change at several levels, and will continue to do so. The most notable of these changes is the city’s transformation from industrial city into a seat of higher learning, technology and modern housing. An exceptionally well developed infrastructure makes Malmö very easy to reach. The city has an international harbour and the airports Kastrup and Sturup are only half an hour’s journey from the centre. The motorway reaches right into the city centre and Malmö has excellent rail connections with the rest of Sweden and Europe.
The city, the sea, the people and the joie de vivre – Malmö simply has so much to offer for people of all ages and interests. Maybe you have already heard of Turning Torso and the Öresund Bridge. BT Kemi, Municipality of Svalöv
The BT Sanitary Treatment is the result of one of our largest former herbicide producers in Sweden. The ”poison scandal” in Teckomatorp has been covered by media since the 1970ties. Dugged down barrels, poisonous chemicals in the river Braån and a bad smell around the village of Teckomatorp has been some of the headlines. After several attempts to remediate the site, the County Administrative Board and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency has now taken the first step to a final sanitation of the area.
Malmö Citytunnel Project
A total of 17 km railway through Malmö city and the construction of three new stations is a project that will impact the entire Öresund region. The citytunnel project will involve lowering the water table temporarily along parts of the route. During the construction of Malmö C station, a large amount of contaminated soil containing heavy metals and different types of oil from former railway activities, will be handled.
